Privacy Policy — Skeinery

Overview

Skeinery ("the App") is developed by Ruben Nahatakyan. This policy explains what data the App stores, where that data is kept, when it leaves your device, and how you can delete it.

Data Collection

The App has no account and no sign-in. It has no network code of its own. It connects to the internet only through Apple services: iCloud, to sync your data, and the App Store, for the in-app purchase. The App does not send your projects, counters, yarn or photos to the developer.

Data Stored by the App

The data you add in the App is saved in the App's database on your device. The App and its widget use the same database.

  • Projects: title, craft, status, the date the project was created, notes, whether the project is pinned to the widget, and an optional photo
  • Counters: name, current count, step, target, order and repeat settings
  • Yarn stash: brand, colorway, dye lot, weight, yardage, quantity, notes and an optional photo for each skein
  • Daily progress: the number of rows added to each project on each day

What the App Does Not Do

  • The App does not contain advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking code.
  • The App does not contain third-party code.
  • The App does not ask for permission to access your photo library, camera, location, contacts, calendars, health data or notifications.

Photos

To add a photo to a project or a skein, you choose it in the system photo picker, and the App reads only the photo you choose. The App saves the photo file exactly as it receives it and does not remove information embedded in the file. Photo files can contain details such as the date and the location where the photo was taken. If a photo you choose contains such details, they are stored with the photo on your device and, when iCloud sync is available, in your private iCloud database.

iCloud Sync

The App syncs its whole database, including photos, to your private iCloud database using Apple's CloudKit, so the same data can appear on your other iPhone or iPad that uses Skeinery with the same Apple Account. Sync is included for everyone, whether or not you make the in-app purchase. The App has no setting of its own to turn sync off; the iCloud Sync row in the App's Settings opens the iOS Settings app. Apple explains how to choose which apps use iCloud in its iCloud User Guide (https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/set-up-icloud-on-your-devices-mmfc0f1e2a/icloud).

Apple's CloudKit documentation (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/cloudkit/ckcontainer/privateclouddatabase) states that the private database is available only if the device has an iCloud account, that by default only you can access it, that its data is not visible in Apple's developer portal, and that it counts toward your iCloud storage quota.

Without an iCloud account on your device, the App does not sync, and your data stays in the App's database on your device. Changes do not always sync immediately.

In-App Purchase

The App offers one in-app purchase, a one-time unlock, through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment. The App reads whether you own the unlock from Apple's StoreKit on your device. The App does not store your purchase information itself and does not send it to the developer.

Widget and Shortcuts

If you add the Skeinery widget, it shows the title of the project you pinned and the name and count of one of that project's counters, so anyone who can see the widget can see them.

The App's "Add Rows" action for the Shortcuts app takes a project name, a counter name and a number of rows. It uses the names to find that counter in the App's database, adds the rows, and does not store the names you enter.

Export

You can export a CSV file of your projects, counters and yarn stash, or a one-page PDF of one project with its counters and notes. Neither export includes photos. The App creates the export files in a temporary folder on your device, and you share them through the system share sheet. The App does not send an export file anywhere itself; you choose where it goes.

Contact Support

The Contact Support row in the App's Settings opens your email app with a new message addressed to ruben@nahatakyan.com. Nothing is sent unless you send the message. If you send it, the developer receives your email address and the contents of your message.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your data stays in the App until you delete it. You can delete data in the App:

  • Delete Project removes a project together with its photo, counters and daily progress. Yarn in your stash is kept.
  • Delete Skein removes a skein together with its photo.
  • Remove Photo, followed by Save, removes a project's photo.

The App has no option to delete all data at once. To remove everything, delete each project and each skein. When iCloud sync is available, deletions are also synced to your private iCloud database and to your other devices.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page will change.
